SNA Endorses Sanctioned Campsites as Alternative to HUCIRP “Sweeps”

At its January 14th, 2021 meeting the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association voted to endorse our own District 42 State Representative Rob Nosse’s call to City and County leaders to use emergency funding and powers to immediately site additional sanctioned camping areas throughout SE Portland and the city as a whole.  Working directly with SEUL Executive Director Leroy Eadie, the following draft letter has been distributed to all of the Neighborhood Associations in the hope of SE Uplift voting to formally endorse it as soon as protocols allow.

Volunteer Opportunity: Cleanup Crew

Members of the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association are actively engaged in trash pickup and other cleanup activities throughout the neighborhood.

Volunteers can participate in a number of ways including from walking a prescribed route and picking up small litter and debris through the Adopt One Block initiative to assisting with bagging and hauling large piles of abandoned or discarded waste.  Equipment can be provided by Adopt One Block or the SNA depending on the activity.

To learn more and get on our cleanup mailing list, please contact Vincent Dawans, SNA Cleanup Coordinator at [email protected].

SNA Community Safety & Livability Update

The members of the SNA Community Safety & Livability (CS&L) committee would like to extend our gratitude for the large turnout at the December 15th meeting. It’s very important to hear the concerns and needs of our community so that the committee can address and establish solutions to make the Sunnyside neighborhood safe and welcoming for all. A big thank you to Raven Drake, Street Roots Ambassador Program Manager, who shared valuable insights with us on how to do outreach and communicate with our growing population of houseless neighbors. In addition to meeting Raven at the December meeting, committee members attended an outreach training on December 26th guided by Raven and her team. We also want to thank both State Representative Rob Nosse for attending our meeting and Street Roots for the outreach training that helped us to learn more about how to navigate this growing concern.
