7:10 – 7:25 : (Jan + group discussion) Review of Map Your Neighborhood (MYN) “9 Steps Immediately Following a Disaster.” This activity generated valuable collaborative discussion last month, so we’ll repeat it to introduce the concepts to new attendees, and to reinforce it for veterans planning their own MYN project.

8:10 – 8:15 : (Glenn) A quick update of what other nearby NET teams are doing. Since we’re trying to build regional cooperation, we should all be aware. There is lot of mutual inspiration in the air!

8:15 – 8:30 : (Stephanie, Glenn, other NETs) Show and tell! We’ll bring our NET kits to show the gear they contain, and give you ideas for your own emergency prep kit beyond the usual items. NETs are encourage to bring and show off their kits too. It will give you motivation to inventory it before the meeting. 🙂

SNA EP NET Meeting Notes – Jan 19 2016

Notes from SNA EP NET Committee meeting 01/19/16, 10am-12pm at the Jeff Morris Fire Museum (12 attendees)

Our next meeting will be Tue, Feb 16, 2016, 7-9pm, location TBA. An agenda will be posted here in advance.

Notes and follow-up info:

  1. Committee Co-chair Jan led us through three interactive exercises to kick-start Map Your Neighborhood (MYN) efforts. This is a critical and fun process for preparing your micro-neighborhood for emergencies, and a good excuse for planning a block party or pot luck! A recurring theme of the discussion was that we need to foster our neighborhood relationships now, before an emergency occurs. Your neighbors are truly your “first responders”.
  2. There is a series of Map Your Neighborhood videos online, courtesy of Tigard CERT.
  3. MYN booklets are being redesigned by PBEM (Portland Bureau of Emergency Management) and should be available soon.
  4. We’ll think about how to enable Sunnysiders to claim/register their micro-neighborhood MYN activities, and publish the info in a map on our website and on Nextdoor.com. Thanks to Margaret for the suggestion.
  5. Sunnyside NET Team Leader Stephanie will draft a plan to involve more renters (60%+ of Sunnyside residents), landlords, and property management firms.
  6. Lauren will make initial contact with the Belmont Library about providing emergency prep info in print, to serve residents who do not have easy access to our website or e-newsletters.
  7. As mentioned in November, PBEM will soon publish a NET “Task Book”. A draft has been distributed to Team Leaders. Steph and I are thrilled with it, and it will probably be our Team’s guide for for Advanced Training sessions. Completion of the 26 listed tasks will earn a coveted challenge coin. It is expected that it will require two or three years to complete all the requirements, so it will be a great motivator for all of us to remain engaged and improve our skills.
  8. For those of you in the queue for NET Basic Training, note that the University of Portland is offering free basic CERT classes. Graduates from the program can become NET volunteers. View the schedule and sign up.

Not mentioned at the meeting, but . . .

  • If you cannot join us this time, please mark your calendar for the next meeting, Tue, Tue 16, 7-9pm, location TBD.

10:00 – 10:05 : Brief attendee introductions – name and organizational affiliation, if any.

10:05 – 10:07 : (Glenn) A very brief explanation of the closer collaboration we’re developing for Sunnyside NET and the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association Emergency Preparedness Committee.

  • How to create a neighborhood contact list

This is a critical process for preparing your micro-neighborhood for emergencies, so we’ll have handouts to help you kickstart your own MYN project. If you have already begun, please come share your experience and advice!

11:45 – 12:00 : (Stephanie) Exciting stuff is in store for NETs, including a reward-oriented way to motivate all of use to build our skills with advanced training.

SNA EP NET Meeting Notes – Nov 17 2015

Notes from SNA EP NET Committee meeting 11/17/15, 7-9pm at Fire Station 09 (20 attendees)

(Due to space limitation, attendance at this meeting was restricted to Active NETs and a handful of the most engaged neighborhood activists. Our meetings are usually open to all, but this was a unique opportunity to engage with PBEM and PF&R, so we were compelled to give “first dibs” on limited seating to those who have been actively working on emergency preparedness in our community.)

Jeremy Van Keuren (NET Program Specialist, Portland Bureau of Emergency Management) provided a detailed update about the NET program, including current status and possible future plans. Key notes:

  • There are more than 1,000 NET Applicants waiting for basic training.
  • There will probably be a major training event in March for up to 400 participants. Details TBA; Applicants will be notified. In the meantime, view the prerequisite online videos and pass the quiz, and submit your background check if you haven’t already.
  • A “Task Book” is in the works which will encourage Advanced Training and earn a challenge coin for successful participants. It is expected that it will require two years to complete all the requirements.
  • The NET Leadership Committee, which will meet sometime in January, is considering reorganizing Teams according to geographic/functional regions, rather than the artificial neighborhood boundaries currently used. This will enable teams to work more efficiently, and share knowledge more effectively.
  • Ernie Jones, PBEM Volunteer Program Development, is coordinating outreach events and trainings, including CPR and First Aid certifications.

Our gracious host firefighters at Station 09 (which serves Sunnyside) gave us a tour of the station and their equipment.

The NET team continued its discussion of the ICS (Incident Command System), a requisite component of every effective NET Team Member’s knowledge.

There will be no meeting in December. We will next meet January 19, 10a-12p. Location to be announced on www.SunnysidePrepared.com.

SNA EP NET Meeting Notes – Oct 20 2015

Notes from SNA EP NET Committee meeting 10/20/15, 10am-12pm at Hawthorne Hostel (12 attendees)

The Committee will apply for a Southeast Uplift grant, likely to create a free “tour of prepared homes”.  The tour would enable SEUL residents to see the steps others have taken to prepare for emergencies, from seismic retrofitting to bulk water storage.

The SouthEast Portland Tool Library is also applying for a grant to conduct seismic retrofitting workshops, and to procure the necessary tools. If both grants are approved, we will cross-promote with SEPTL.

OK/HELP window signs should be available from PBEM early next year.

Multnomah County Library is conducting a series of earthquake preparedness workshops, which several attendees endorsed as worthwhile.

Ann & Lee described their experience conducting a Map Your Neighborhood project. Their very interesting presentation led to a productive discussion that inspired others. MYN brochures are currently out-of-stock, but PBEM plans to have a new supply available early next year. This is a critical step to preparing your micro-neighborhood for emergencies of any kind.
